Answer: Long workdays are extremely common in the investment banking industry. Junior bankers (analysts and associates) frequently work 80-hour weeks (or even longer ones). Working weekends is also par for the course. A typical day might see a junior banker working on more than one project. One common class of tasks centers on valuation analysis (usually comparable companies, precedent transactions and discounted cash flows, the last of which usually requires the creation of a financial projection model). Other tasks could include work on pitch books, offering memos, client meetings, travel for due diligence, and even work on recruiting the next group hires for the bank.

It is important that candidates present themselves in such a way that the interviewer feels that each of those three questions has been answered. Interviewees should research the firm to which they are applying. They should demonstrate that they understand what bankers do on a daily basis; this means knowing that banks value companies, help companies in mergers & acquisitions and help companies in raising capital (equity and debt).
