Review of the Certified Hedge Fund Professional (CHP) Designation Program

Since the Hedge Fund Group launched the Certified Hedge Fund Professional designation we have grown incredibly quickly with more than 1,200 participants spanning many different countries.  A few of our participants wanted to share their experiences in the Certified Hedge Fund Professional program.  Here is a selection of video quotes on the CHP designation.

First, a Level 1 Certified Hedge Fund Professional explains why the Certified Hedge Fund Professional program is in such high-demand and how it services a very specific area:

Transcript:

Hedge funds evoke strong reactions for most people. For some they represent the ills of financial capitalism. But for others they represent the very spirit of financial entrepreneurship. Either the twist, their importance into this financial world can hardly be understood.

However, despite their growing relevance and popularity, they’re not there as a subject in most of the business schools around the world. Consequently, most of the learning in this industry is on their job. However, going to that local secrecy and a lack of after demand, getting a job at a hedge fund is highly difficult. There are various ways in which aspirants try to secure a job at hedge fund. Some join the investment bonds, sell-side analysts hoping to jump into the boat as buy-side analyst at a hedge fund. Others, take internships as junior analyst or juniors traders hoping to be able to convert it into a full-time position in 6 months to one year. The competition ladder is really tough.

And that is where a program like CHP, Certified Hedge Fund Professional, are a tremendous value. Not only is the program highly prestigious but at the same time it provides us stakes with the in depth knowledge of the hedge fund industry along with the specialization in either of both for the analytics, due diligence or marketing. The standard of exam is really very high and the candidate has no choice but how to be tied to with the course material. And receiving the certificate that they can truly understand how the industry works and develop an analytical mindset in order to succeed in the industry.

A part from the knowledge the certificate also provides access to a large database of hedge fund professionals. This database is highly unmatched and it’s difficult to find similarity elsewhere. From a personal standpoint I work at a reputable hedge fund as a research analyst in Singapore and I can stay with conviction that rightly in CHP level 1 and CHP level 2, and becoming a certified hedge fund professional has provided me with the knowledge and he definition factor that is needed to succeed in this competitive industry in all my career.

A second Certified Hedge Fund Professional training participant explains her background, why she completed Level 1 of the CHP designation and the benefits that she received from the program:

Transcript:

Hello, this is Christine Zaremba. Thank you for tuning in to my 3-minute video presentation on my background, why I completed level 1 of the Certified Hedge Fund Professional designation and what benefits I’ve received by complete level 1 of the CHP designation.

I began my career as a receptionist at Diamondback Capital Management, a firm based in Stanford, Connecticut. I commuted there every day for a couple of weeks and eventually began utilizing my training at the New York City based hedge fund. I worked with hedge funds professionals from around the tri-state area at the newly acquired Diamondback Advisors New York, LLC. My primary obligations were to support equity analysts, traders, researchers, portfolio managers as well as our office management and our newly forming clientele. Taking on the role of two receptionists at this brand new construction site did not deter me from gearing my way towards the path to success.

The few months I worked at this hedge fund in 2008 is what inspired me to begin earning certified hedge fund professional designation about a year later. Here I gained insight into the backgrounds of the interesting people who worked at this hedge fund, either a few days a week or around the clock and I earned a great deal of respect from their satisfaction with their professions. Most of all, I enjoyed greeting new clients and representing the New York firm as the face of Diamondback New York.

I completed CHP level 1 because I knew relatively little about the hedge fund industry in this role. Since my preliminary understanding consisted solely of how each professional interacted with one another, I needed to acquire information into business practices in order to access information and current industry trends and pricing models. I utilized the Bloomberg trading platform only temporarily so I could not advance my trading skills beyond mere pricing inquiries.

The platform did however open my eyes to new exchanges in foreign markets and territories as well keeping me informed with financial news from around the world. Global currency is another evolving topic that I became enthusiastic about learning. One particular example I read on your website that I’d like to gain insight into is the aftereffects of the Diamondback Capital Management and Lehman Brothers deal. I heard the Diamondback lost $77M on the deal but nothing ever again.

At the time I worked for Diamondback they opened a new hedge fund in New York and they told me they were creating new funds in Connecticut surrounding their Stanford headquarters including Harbor Watch. What I’d like to know is what happens to the idea of creating new hedge funds when capital management firms’ performance fees are sacrificed at every existing location? And will professionals sacrifice their performance fees based on their rate of return at firms such as Diamondback even in the aftermath of such an occurrence?

The greatest benefit I’ve earned by completing the level 1 CHP designation is by far networking with hedge fund professionals. Not only our friends and extended family extremely enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge in hedge fund stories, new positions are becoming available as my initial desire which was to become an administrator at an alternative based asset hedge fund in the city evolved into keeping my career options open after taking this course. I find the additional marketing materials that the hedge fund group CHP designation provides to be extremely rewarding and valuable in terms of learning what works and what doesn’t work within the hedge fund industry.

For example, last Tuesday’s hedge fund career webinar, without this free real-time service providing program, I could not develop my resume, work with a free career tips, learn about service providing and hedge fund startups and gain a more thorough and an insightful understanding into exactly why I’m taking this course in the first place. Only one position in my life has brought me all three factors, an enthusiasm for passion, I was the best in world at it and I never made such a great profit within a short amount of time that I worked at Diamondback as I have at any other position.

I seek continuing on my path towards success by earning the respect of successful hedge fund professionals being very consistent with the quality of work that I produce and having the patience and positive attitude required to meet the demands of the hedge fund industry and firm business practices. I believe the instruction that those who can grow their specialized knowledge more quickly grow themselves as an asset and as a direct result are worth more. My path to success does consist of being proactive and taking risks, daily action and quick learning. I plan to uncover hidden opportunities that I didn’t know exist yet.

Thank you so much for providing service materials in addition to the Certified Hedge Fund Professional designation course materials. Have a great evening.

This participant explains how the Certified Hedge Fund Professional has complemented his fifteen years of experience in the alternative investment industry:

Transcript:

I am an independent financial adviser and a portfolio manager. I have an experience of more than 50 years in the alternative investment area. I have in my entire professional career worked with equity derivatives and designing alternative strategies with options. I advice what’s fair with clients to the level of alternative strategies in their portfolios, mainly working with their investment balance and with their private bankers advisors.

When I found out the CHP designation program, the first thing that I did was to have a look to recommend it to the others, and I found them very useful and practical. I have to say that the program is very analytic and it gives enough resources to go into the K factors of the alternative investments. One of the most interesting points of the program has been related with the different strategies of the hedge fund world. From my point view, I think that the program treat all the matters in a very doable way.

The alternative investment and the hedge fund industry require a competent knowledge. Firstly, it’s important to know about the wide classes of assets. Second, it is very important to understand about the different types of strategies on how they work. And finally, it is necessary to have a clear understanding about the new terms and terminology that involve the style of investment management. In some way, if you’re not able to analyze in depth the different strategies, is probably that you don’t understand how important it is to have a clear understanding.

My experience tell me that to build a portfolio it is necessary to analyze the respective return basis on the risk taken for the individual assets and it is necessary to evaluate the effect of that analysis into the total portfolio. In the absolute return industry it is a problem to treat any portfolio construction in a selfish manner. In this sense, I find this program very complete and absolutely focalized in the K factors, other times to understand the decision-taking process and to manage a portfolio, or other times to analyze the risk factors that involves in a trained decision. As far, as I am specializing in equity derivatives it has been an opportunity to have a global view of the alternative investment industry. And now, it has been very interesting to study in depth the other different strategies of the hedge fund world.

Therefore, I think that it has not been only an opportunity to improve my knowledge in all the areas of the study but definitely an opportunity to learn and to have a better understanding about the absolute return industry and I am sure that it will help me in the future together on my professional career.

The Certified Hedge Fund Professional designation program has really taken off since its inception in 2008.  I hope that these videos have given you a better idea of the Certified Hedge Fund Professional designation.

CHP Designation Review

A few years ago, I noticed that professionals in the hedge fund industry had very limited options when it came to training.  So, I along with the Hedge Fund Group designed the Certified Hedge Fund Professional designation.  Since then, we have provided 100% online hedge fund training to more than 1,200 professionals around the world.  Some of our participants have been kind enough to share their experiences in the Certified Hedge Fund Professional program.

First, a Level 1 Certified Hedge Fund Professional explains how the certification helped improve his resume:

Transcript:

My name is Kevin and I just recently completed the level 1 Certification for Hedge Fund Professionals. The reasons why I chose to pursue the certification are (1), I have a great passion for finance and through that I am pursuing a career in the hedge fund industry. (2) I want a competitive advantage for competing against Ivy League candidates for hedge fund positions. Finally (3), to learn a great sense of knowledge regarding investment strategies, portfolio analytics, funds of funds and the hedge fund industry as a whole.

You know coming from a nontraditional university, the CHP provides me with an advantage in entering the finance industry and it also gives me a leg up when competing for watch your positions. I may not be coming from an Ivy League institution but when I’m up for a competitive position the CHP gives me an opportunity to standout among others. For example, just last year I was an equity research analyst at an investment relations firm and through that experience alone, I was able to be noticed and picked up by a managing director from one of the top capital asset management companies in the Southeast region.

From that initial contact, I received an e-mail for a full-time offer at their firm and was also told that I was competing against three other students from Ivy League institutions. Yet again, being the only one from a nontraditional school, the CHP provided me with the tools and knowledge to be able to surpass a series of tests and in the end I was able to outperform those other candidates. Because of the designation program that the CHP offers, I was able to be involved with the in depth and comprehensive course rate that specializes in the hedge fund industry.

Also, through the great network within the hedge fund group, I’ve been able to gain great exposure and also be noticed by top firms. I recommend this program to anyone who has a drive and passion for finance and especially in the hedge fund industry. To all the students especially those from the non-traditional school, this is a great opportunity to confirm and validate your passion for finance to any firm out there on Wall Street as well as giving you an advantage when going up against an Ivy League candidate and other top performers. Thank you.

A second Certified Hedge Fund Professional training participant shares his experience:

Transcript:

Good morning. I’m Casey. I’m a software engineer. I develop products used in the creation of computer chips for consumer electronic devices. For decades, I’ve had a passion for automated trading systems. 8 months ago, I decided to turn this passion into a gainful employment. In my search, I came upon the Hedge Fund Group and their CHP Certified Hedge Fund Professional program. I decided to pursue the program. The program has had three benefits for me.

First, it has given a sense of the ecology of hedge funds, operations, investors and support organizations. Second, it’s given me a new appreciation for risk, what it is, how it’s measure and how to manipulate it. This is critical in understanding and evaluating automated trading systems. Third and most important, through the supplemental materials and coaching from the team at the Hedge Fund Group, I have developed a personal plan for achieving gainful employment in the hedge fund industry and I’ve been executing successfully on this plant.

The CHP program has delivered the value it promised to me. Now, I’m sure it will deliver this value for you as well. Have a great day.

Another CHP participant explains the benefits of joining the Certified Hedge Fund Professional designation and how it helped him as a fund manager:

Transcript:

Hi, my name is Chad Gardener. I’m a fund manager at Gardner Investments Limited and we’re registered in the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean and we manage a corporate called “Fund.” For those of you who don’t know what that is, basically we trade stocks and options for short-term income.

And the Caribbean is a great place to be in a hedge fund industry and apart from the great weather. We have all the hedge fund consultants at our fingertips and accountants and lawyers that we can focus on trading, that’s what we do best. But we have a credibility issue, you know we’re always fighting to prove our credibility and that’s why I felt the need to become a certified hedge fund professional.

The CHP will enhance our credibility and make us part of a global group of professionals. And the CHP also gives us direct access to other industry professional. You know it has just the network within the industry. Another great thing about the CHP is that the exam is online. You know, we’re in the Caribbean, we’d have to get on a plane and fly to the US to take a paper-based exam. So the online exam is perfect for us. That’s three great reasons to join the program. I would encourage anyone in the industry to join.

Finally, a buy-side equity analyst and aspiring hedge fund manager explains how the CHP designation has improved his knowledge of the hedge fund industry:

Transcript:

Hi, this is a testimonial for a CHP level 1 program that I recently completed. Throughout this preparation, I had an opportunity to learn about the broad understanding of hedge fund industry. In my case, I work as a buy-side equity analyst and learning about the due diligence process or third-party marketing was very powerful as my long-term career goal is to be a hedge fund manager.

And also if you’re new in the industry or trying to get into this market I think this program is very helpful. It’s not because it’s the exam that’s really for the hedge fund industry but also it will train you to be able to speak same language as other hedge fund professionals. In fact, it is an advantage to have at the job interview. One example is, I recently had a job interview with one of the major firm in the US that provide a consulting service in the hedge fund industry.

Also, I think if you work in a mutual fund especially as an investment advisor this will probably be really helpful because you will be able to provide additional information to the clients that is not exposed in the mutual funds. Overall, I think it’s a great program and I’m excited to participate on level 2.

There’s nothing like hearing about a program straight from the professionals who have completed it.  I hope that these videos help you understand how the CHP can help you and your career.

Hedge Fund Training

A question that I often receive is, do I need hedge fund training?  In the following video, I provide some reasons that you should consider completing a hedge fund training program.

Video Transcript/SummaryThe strategies and tips provided within this video module include:

  1. Few professionals are formally trained on hedge funds.
  2. Thus, many hedge fund professionals are not very familiar with other strategies and how other hedge funds or fund of hedge funds operate.
  3. Hedge fund training can sometimes lead to promotions or new business opportunities.
  4. Most of our economy in Europe and the United States is knowledge-based so that is our #1 asset and you need to invest in growing that knowledge.

Transcript for Hedge Fund Training

Hello, this is Richard Wilson and welcome to this short video on hedge fund training. One question I often get is whether — somebody is asking me whether they need hedge fund training or what’s the importance of getting trained on the topic of hedge funds, and I just wanted to cover that real brief because it’s such a common question.

The most important reason why you should receive training on hedge funds is that there really is not very many professionals and not a higher percentage of professionals who have been formally trained on hedge funds. So most people aren’t aware of other investment strategies that are much different from their own or they’re not aware of exactly how the fund of hedge funds operate. They do at a very high level, at the 10,000-foot level but not at the 500-foot level or 1,000-foot level which could make the difference ineffectively being able to work with the fund of hedge fund, maybe work for a fund of hedge fund or in the future, you know who know what types of joint partnerships or ventures might be available between you and the fund to fund.

So I think that that’s just one example of why it’s important to learn more about hedge funds. But other than that I’ve seen people who after completing hedge fund training programs were promoted from a hedge fund research associate to a portfolio manager and risk manager within a hedge fund. I know professionals who now are running companies such as a hedge fund recruiting firm that I spoke to last week, they now require everybody on their team complete CHP designation because they want to know that their recruiters know enough about hedge funds so they could work with their clients. They’re not going to embarrass the company or make a mistake. That’s really basic knowledge about hedge funds.

And I think the final reason why hedge fund training or really any type of training is valuable, is that most of our economy in Europe, United States is knowledge-based economy. Peter Drucker called us “knowledge workers” because instead of working with steel and metal and hard materials, we’re working with knowledge and abilities and skills that people have, which is all related to what you can learn and what you’ve been trained on.

And so if you think of a knowledge worker versus more of a blue-collar type job where you’re working with hard materials, your knowledge is really your asset. Like you yourself are your most valuable and most important asset. And the faster you grown that asset the more that you’re worth. And if you can grow that asset with knowledge, it’s specific to the job that you have, that’s going to be worth 2 times, 10 times, maybe 30 times more than knowledge that is just maybe more generic. You could read a book on sales or get sales training but how much valuable would it be to get capital raising training for hedge funds. That’s mini layers, more specific and more valuable.

So I think that lots of people sometimes forget that and forget how important they are as their own asset and positioning yourself in the industry with all of your experience, training and relationships is really one of the most important things you can kind of thing through and plan. So those are the main points I wanted to get across about the importance of hedge fund training. I hope that answers a few of your questions. And if you have more questions, please feel free to send them in to us. Thank you for your time.

I created the Certified Hedge Fund Professional program because I knew how valuable a training program on hedge funds would be.  Since then, more than 1,200 professionals have enrolled in the program and gained greater knowledge about hedge funds.

Hedge Fund Trends

Since we started our hedge fund consulting and media firm we have published thousands of articles and written and received thousands of emails with hedge funds and hedge fund professionals.  This experience has given us a lot of perspective on trends in the hedge fund industry.  In the following video, I describe the top four hedge fund trends in the industry today.

Video Transcript/SummaryThe strategies and tips provided within this video module include:

  1. Due to fraud in the news and some poor performance recently, the importance of transparency and governance has never been higher.
  2. Multi-prime brokerage.  Many hedge funds now often work with multiple prime brokers.
  3. The use of investor databases, third party marketing and external capital raising services is on the rise.
  4. Investors want an institutional-quality hedge fund firm even among smaller funds.

Transcript for Hedge Fund Trends

Hello, this is Richard Wilson and welcome to this video. We’re going to be talking today on the top 4 industry trends. So as we started our hedge fund consulting and media firm two years ago, we’ve sent and received over 800,000 e-mails, worked with over 1,000 hedge fund managers, and one thing that has given us is a lot of perspective on trends in the industry. We write daily on hedgeblogger.com and try to pick through news items and different trends we’re seeing in the industry and interviews we’ve done and share them with the industry. And we just want to share what we see as the top 4 trends right now.

If you’re a hedge consultant, service provider, a hedge manager or looking to work in the industry this could be information which can make your business more profitable or advance your career much more quickly by positioning yourself as one of the people whose on top of these trends or who understands it and has taken advantage of what’s about to happen or what is happening. So now let’s get started here.

The first trend is that due to fraud in the news related to hedge funds, some poor performance and some unclear hedge fund policies, not gaining clauses, et cetera. The importance of transparency and governance has never been higher. Those firms should be very proactive in being transparent and having great governance will have an advantage if you’re looking to interview the hedge fund. You can become somewhat of an expert on transparency, 50 ways of hedge fund can become more transparent or 20 things that should be in place for you to have a very strong governance. It’s a huge advantage.

If you’re a hedge fund manager and you’re very proactive on being transparent, doing monthly reporting or weekly reporting on various aspects related to risk or your operations, or you’re very advanced and have best practices in place for governance, that’s a huge advantage because most professionals, most hedge fund managers don’t mention these things when they market their hedge funds. Those that do they’re not always doing that well and if you can consistently be proactively ahead of the curve in these two areas, it will be a huge return on your investment of time and money.

And so I see this as a growing trend and a place where managers with less than a billion under management can put these things in place without having to spend $20M in infrastructure or on certain software and technology. These things can be put in place relatively in low amounts of capital. So those are two very important trends.

Another important trend right now is multi-prime brokerage. I don’t know of many hedge funds with over $100M that do not work with three or more prime brokers. And now what hedge funds are doing is once they get past $5M in assets they’re putting $1M to $2M or $3M with a second prime brokerage firm and after they get past $30M most that I’ve been speaking to are looking to place some assets with a third prime broker. There definitely is a large push by prime brokers to retain more assets and more hedge fund managers so hedge fund managers or sometimes ordinary or two change prime brokers, but there definitely is a trend of a multi-prime brokerage model. Technology companies I speak to are saying a lot of the popularity within their multi-prime technology platforms and the prime brokers I’m speaking to, it meant that they’re often working alongside competitors when serving their clients.

The third trend that we’re seeing here is the use of outside capital raising resources. Most hedge funds have trouble raising the amount of capital they would like to raise; almost everybody would like to be managing more capital. So the use of investor databases, third-party marketing and external capital raising consultants is on the rise. If the hedge fund industry is based on competitive knowledge and we are knowledge workers and time is money because the faster we work, the more capital we can to raise, the more risk we can manage, the more solid investment decisions we can make then it just comes natural that if you can hire an expert in marketing to help you move up that learning curve faster is going to save you money and add value to your firm long-term, instead of spending 300 hours yourself completing your own database of investors, you go to an investor database company and you buy a few investor databases, if that’s, say 200 hours then you might have saved yourself $20,000 or $15,000.

And this is one area that I think will only rise because not only is the hedge industry becoming more competitive but other industries such as commercial real estate, cash management, traditional fund management, they’re all becoming more competitive and what that means is that one investors like a wealth management firm, let’s say Gen Spring Wealth Management, a very large wealth management firm, they’re getting hit from all sides more often. So it’s really exponentially growing the number of inputs they have to them, which means you need to get to your investors faster in multiple modalities, multiple types of marketing materials and you’d be sending them things in the mail, over the phone, over e-mail and you’d be reaching deeper into the market. Maybe going after some investors which aren’t brand name investors which are being sought after by 10,000 different investment companies a year for capital.

So because of all of those factors these capital raising tools are becoming much more important. If you’d like to learn more about third-party marketing we have a free blog with over 200 resources at thirdpartymarketing.com and we have some databases at investordatabases.com.

The fourth trend which is really growing and is more all encompassing and probably more important than any of these others is that investors want an institutional quality firm. They want to have the operations or risk management, the research, the pedigree of a billion-dollar plus firm in a much smaller structure. So to meet that need what’s happening is hedge fund managers are hiring independent administration firms, hiring capital raising experts, they’re hiring technology firms to put into place, best practice, infrastructure, reporting and transparency. This relates to the first trend on transparency and governance but it’s much wider.

Being an institutional quality means having the right professionals on the team with the right experience and talent, having the right type of service partners which appear to be institutional quality and our institutional quality. And it’s really important that a fund manager nowadays promotes them self and has all the things in place that show tangible evidence of being an institutional quality firm on a proactive basis because everybody would like to have these things in place, but hardly anyone does. And so if you have these in place even before the investor asks for it or when the investor ask for something such as a compliance report, you have it and could send it within a half hour, that’s an institutional quality response and they can feel that and it will be obvious, whereas if you don’t have these things in place or can’t produce them that will also be obvious.

But it’s just a growing trend that the decision on whether an investor invests or not is more and more being based on this institutional quality factor than it is on track record or a team alone or a transparency in governance.
