Question: What are some of the different job titles an investment banking professional might hold?
Answer: Job titles may vary somewhat from bank to bank. A common hierarchy starts from the bottom with the analysts (who are hired from undergraduate programs) and then progresses to associates (who are promoted from the analyst program or hired from MBA programs). Titles above the associate level are usually grouped as “officers” of the bank and include Vice President, Directors and Managing Directors. Executive Director and Principal are other titles that may be used. A Managing Director (often called an “MD”) may be a “group head” (in charge of an industry segment such as “transportation”) and the group heads report to the “head of investment banking”.
