Question: How much is education vs. experience valued in the investment banking industry?
Answer: In traditional investment banking jobs such as M&A advisory or general corporate finance, education is a required stepping stone to getting hired in the first place. That said, work experience and on the job performance very quickly trump any educational credentials once the employee is hired. The preceding text may not be true in other areas within an investment bank such as sales & trading or brokerage where education can play even less of a role in landing employment. The fact that some investment banking analysts are offered promotion to the associate level after three (or so) years of experience demonstrates that experience is highly valued.
