Answer: There are indeed a few ways to impress a boss early in an investment banking career. Some things will of course be taken for granted such as showing up on time and dressed properly. Bosses may be impressed by a junior banker’s knowledge of his/her industry, so it is important to keep up with current events, especially those related to finance and to the potential client base. Taking the initiative to go beyond the minimal work effort is also a great way to impress others; as an example, a boss might ask for a list of comparable clothing retailers, but you might also suggest specialty retailers that could be positioned as comparables (due to similar growth rates).
