Investment Banking CertificationQuestion: Are there different kinds of investment banking job titles?

Answer: There certainly are, and they can vary somewhat from bank to bank. A common hierarchy starts from the bottom with the analysts (hired from undergraduate programs) and then progresses to associates (promoted from the analyst program or hired from MBA programs). Titles above the associate level are usually grouped as “officers” of the bank and include Vice Presidents, Directors and Managing Directors. Executive Director and Principal are other titles that are sometimes used. A Managing Director (called an “MD”) may be a “group head” (in charge of an industry segment such as “transportation”) and the group heads report to the “head of investment banking.”
